It’s hard to fix a wrinkled heart

The friendship group thought what affects others can have on our feelings.

We watched the story ‘A wrinkled heart’ and discussed the actions of what people say and do and how it can have an impact on us. The group talked about how even though people apologise and move on, the feeling may not always completely go away – the heart can still be a little ‘wrinkled’.

Here’s the link to the story if you’d like to watch it too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwxlnHesAtQ

We then cut out heart shapes, discussed when their hearts had been ‘wrinkled’ and scrunched them up. When we said how other’s had then apologised for their actions, we tried to smooth our hearts out but found they didn’t return flat.

We created a poster “before we speak, think and be smart, it’s hard to fix a wrinkled heart”

Problem solving

Problems come up, and facing them head-on with different strategies is a must!

Our confidence group thought of different situations that knocks their confidence down a little.

We then thought of different problem-solving strategies like;

  • try multiple strategies
  • look at the problem from different angles or perspectives
  • be comfortable asking for help
  • use mistakes to help you move forward
  • and learn from mistakes

We then put the strategies under our problems like a jigsaw. Take a look;

When I feel stuck, I can….

Our confidence group made distraction wheels to give different ideas of what to do when they feel stuck on a problem.

We talked about the different strategies on the wheel and demonstrated how they can use it, to think of ideas to help when they are stuck and feeling low about themselves.

I am strong like a tree

In our Year 5 confidence groups, we have been looking at how we can build up our resilience. We used a tree model to think about what grounds us (the roots) and what pushes us over (the wind).

The children thought hard about the things they love, care for and do to help them when things are a challenge, all the things that keep them standing tall.

They then thought about all the worries, challenges and fears they have that make them doubt themselves.

Take a look at the Wellbeing Room

Our Wellbeing Room has been up and running since November. It is a special place in school, created for a calm, informal, confidential, safe and secure place for pupils to share their thoughts and feelings and to seek help and support.

Ms Clarke also carries out small group work in here with some children who need support to build up their resilience, self-efficacy, positivity and motivation.
